Flow gauge regulator question

My cheapskate flow regulator has a 1/4 barbed outlet. I was considering putting on a 1/4 traded connector, but then I noticed that the barb fitting has a pinhole (less than 1mm dia) bore.

Why? What is the function of this? (I assume something to reduce flow)

Also - what do you call this mechanism? (restrictor/reducer/regulator???)

Don't know, but probably there to act as a flow damper to smooth out the indicator movement.

The pinhole is the basis for turning a steady pressure behind it into steady flow through it, and then onwards to the weling torch. Welding gas regulators with gauges indicating units of l/min, or cu,ft/min normally have the pinhole internally, and the flow calibration will be based on the hole diameter (and length).
