Can anyone recommend a decent floor paint/coating that I can apply myself and is hard wearing - won't flake or peel? I've emptied my garage for the roof to be replaced and it seems like a good opportunity to,sort the concrete floor out.
I just used the stuff from Toolstation, emptied the tin onto a clean floor and pushed it round with a broom. I was really pleased with it as the floor stopped 'dusting up' and oil spills were easier to clean up.
It did mark where I have used pinch bars under heavy machinery but I can't see anything resisting a 1000kg twisting point load!
I used epoxy, cheap 2 component stuff off eBay, mopped it down in February 5 years ago, went off no problem and I think there was snow about... Still looks good
Waste of time using a single component product imho.
Whatever you use...........prime your floor first, the stuff from toolstation isn't bad actually i've used it a few times before,BUT again depends on what you put in on.
How old is the concrete floor, whats its condition?
Oh and its best rolled on
Single part floor paint is pretty much the same stuff you would use to paint a door, and as solvent content seems to have been greatly reduced over the last few years, its going to take a very long time to dry. Epoxy should dry a bit quicker, and is more durable, but with either I would guess 4-5 days before its dry enough to walk on without marking, which is a pain if you need to get whatever was inn shed back in there quite quickly.
I've used International floor paint which is single pack & been pleased with the results. primed it first with their concrete sealer & put it on with a paint roller. It seems to dry overnight, take longer at the moment though. Not used epoxy, but a friend of mine has an engineering business & that's what he uses & it lasts well. Don't know how long it takes to go off though as he does it during shut down.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like the epoxy is the way to go. The concrete floor is about 20 years old but in very good condition. The people who owned the house before just parked their car (very new and leak free) in the garage.
Do the epoxy paints need a primer? I'll have a look at the Blackfriars stuff.
I didn't prime it or seal it, just threw two gallons on a 24 square meter floor. The first coat was soaked up like a sponge, but it was only 40 odd quid a gallon delivered.
Did my double garage floor. Rotary wire brushed the floor and vacuumed the debris. The concrete was thus nice and clean. Has a damp proof membrane in when built so dry anyway. Took the "50 Shades Of Grey" approach. Got an old 25ltr beer fermenting bin and chucked in assorted grey paint from Wickes, T'station, the no nonsense stuff from Screwey's and a couple of 5l tins they were throwing away at work of Leyland I think. Came out a treat. Will be a bitch to match though!
I'm pretty useless with paints and resins etc so I've ordered the rustoleum garage floor kit from Rawlins. It's a bit pricey but apparently contains everything required and clear instructions so hopefully I won't mess it up!
