They are all rubbish these days, if it’s not hard water then go for a slidey one, Peglar if possible. Most low pressure ones have a reducer in the packet that just blocks the inlet up but I despise changing washers or diaphragms. Make sure it has a working service valve for future work

We do have fairly hard water here. Service valve? Does that mean an external isolator, or a shut-off valve on the unit itself? No idea what make they are, but was just planning on picking one up from TS.

https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p94377 That’s the sliding one, i’d choose that as they can be cleaned if limescale is an issue, I don’t like the other type, I’ve had them fail in weeks. A type 2 includes a check valve, in case you wondered what type 1 referred to

The valves i used a long time back were just a different size bore on the on the piece that the rubber disc seals against,

I was wondering what a float valve was, you actually meant to say a ballcock!
You use the jet with the smallest hole for high water pressure, biggest for low pressure. But the small jets are easily blocked with grit so use a bigger one if you can.
BTW, you do realise that you can reuse the rubber seal that sits against the jet by turning it around, if that doesn't work replace the seal. We have these fitted in cattle drinkers all around the farm & it's a very rare occasion that you have to fit a complete new one. A new seal, new float or bending the arm usually fixes a leaky one.

Sort of, but why would you have a tank feeding a tank? Unless it’s properly old school feeding the toilet cistern to stop condensation

Still lots of old bathrooms on tank feed about. As I remember the type 2 valves are newer and have the top outlet knuckle to prevent back siphonage, I have seen plenty of the old type 1 valves with the tube extended down below the water level to make them quieter. Low pressure bigger hole high pressure smaller hole as stated above.

In desperation, to shut a noisy cistern up, I fitted a latex glove over the valve and the water flowed out of the index finger. Probably still there.
