Flat screen tv advice please.

I have always had an old portable TV in my garage just to keep me company and stop me talking to myself, Anyway digital signal put paid to that, I know I could have got a set top box but didn't want to go that route, I now have a flat screen TV in it's place.Will it be beneficial to leave it on standby hoping the slight amount of heat given off will help to protect the innards from the damp atmosphere, the old TV was never troubled but I thought these new fangled models might be more touchy.

yes it will Gordon, you cannot let electronics like that get damp, leaving it on standby will help protect it

The term "liquid crystal" is actually a misnomer when it comes to LCD TVs illuminated with LED backlights. In fact, these crystals have no liquid component: This means they won't freeze and expand like liquids do. However, the images on your screen may "freeze" when you try to use your LED TV at temperatures below your manufacturer's suggested operating zone. When you use your LED TV at cold temperatures, its response time may be compromised, leading to freeze-framing and pixelation on your LCD screen.

If you've been forced to store your LED TV in a cold environment below its minimum operating temperature, exercise caution before powering it back up and wait to acclimate your TV slowly to warmer temperatures. Give your TV up to 24 hours to gradually adjust. Exposing your LED TV to drastic temperature fluctuations can cause dew to form on its sensitive electrical components, affecting its performance.

I had one of these in my garage, which i used to leave on all the time in the winter just stopped it from going below freezing, costs pennies to run.

You need to check the Maximum operating temp of the TV, should have it in the manual, Cold related breakdowns might invalidate the warranty

We have done a few TVs outside pubs in smokers corner, the enclosures have small heaters and forced ventilation to prevent condensation on the cover 'glass'. The relatively low power consumption of a LED TV is (off the top of my head) less than 20W * so I doubt there is much heat emitted.
Slightly different I know but I have kept an old IBM laptop in the van for at least four winters and that has survived , condensation and temperature variations far better than you may have expected.

* Edit: just checked my Samsung standby power consumption is quoted as 'under 0.1W' so no practical heating effect.

Well, I guess that explains why my newly-fitted flatscreen is frame-frozen every time I fire it up, but starts working after I've had just enough time to get the ladder out and adjust the aerial.

Spend the money it will cost to keep iton standby* And buy a dehumidifier, that way it will keep everything dry


*yes I know itwill take some time. But it mightnot be as long as the would think,, our tv uses 250w

Thank you chaps, thats progress for you, my old Ferguson cathode ray tube TV was over 20 years old,got a great picture just off the little round wire loop and hail,rain shine and frost and it never missed a beat,

Modern flat screen TVs consume very little current on standby e.g. I've seen a Panasonic rated at 0.008W on standby (yep, 8 milliwatts) so not much heating effect there!

Just checked my 4yr old LG - the book says standby consumption is 'under 1watt'

If i was you I'd do a quick Google for the manual to see if it does use more on standby but I'd agree with the above and you'll probably need another small heater to keep it condensation free.

What about making an insulated cover (sleeping bag style) do you think that would work?

Put it in a Dartboard type double door cupboard with integral backwall on the garage wall , stood off about an inch or so .
Make it big enough to include .... a double switched socket inside & then add two 12 ac or dc 5 watt bulbs wired in parallel as the heater set below the screen .

Two in parallel ??? .... incase one goes there will be another still working .


The top of the cupboard should also help stop condensation drips falling on the top edge and shorting things out . If you start grinding metal etc you can close the doors to protect the screen .

The 2 x 5 watt bulbs are far cheaper to buy , set up and run than the 45 watt heater in the picture which will use just over 1 kwhr per day .

There you are, two cracking ideas to combine, somewhere tidy for all the drill chargers to live and the telly etc and no 'wasted' power .
One of my variable speed grinder polisher has lost it var speeed down to damp Im sure,
I have a large steel 6ft double cabinet, now going to use that to house all chargers /grinders, drills any damp/ temp sensitive gear etc with telly on the top shelf, small power wash also, fit a 240 socket with the chargers working in there and I will tigerseal some insulation to the inside to keep heat in, brillient!

Whilst abroad fighting for Queen , country & me mates ..
When we went up country all our normal kit was left behind in lockers the only trouble was that like as not it would be covered in green mould by the time we came back .

To overcome this the steel lockers were replaced with plywood ones that could breathe .

In the bottom under a fairly wide shelf that was a foot up from the bottom we had two batton bulb holders screwed into the floor of the cupboard , wired in parallel , with two 5 watt 240 volt pigmy bulbs . There was an insect mesh in the front of the door so you could observe the two lit bulbs .. anyone walking past who was checking them could readily see if one had failed and arrange a replacement . The shelf had four 1 inch holes in it and the whole shelf was covered in steel insect mesh to stop things falling down onto the bulbs and to allow the heat to circulate.

There was also two 1 inch holes as low down as possible in the sides also with insect mesh on , these were to allow fresh air to enter .

They worked well no musty smell and nothing rotting away
