flap disc v fibre sanding disc

whats better for finishing off ,flap discs or fibre sanding discs ? ,and do some makes last longer than others ?,which ones are best avoided ?.

Dont buy anything by Silverline, bloody rubbish.

I reckon that decent flap wheels last longer and you can get a great finish with them if you use a fine enough grit.

The blue flap wheels seem to last longer than the red ones, only my opinion tho.

Personally, I think single fibre sanding discs are better for finishing off as I feel you are less likely to dig in to the metal and can keep the disc nice and flat. Otherwise, the higher (finer) the grit, the easier it will be to get a great finish, at least a 60 grit I would say.

Both have their purposes.

For general fabrication work, flap discs are great for deburring, rounding corners etc.


But if you want to flush off a weld without knowing it was there, like a handrail for instance, fibre discs can be better as its quite hard to dig in. Especially if you are sanding welds on the internal of an elbow. Flap discs wear out the edges, rather than bending around the curve or the tube.
If your backer is a bit too flexible, putting two discs on can make it a bit stiffer.

Fibre discs are my favourite, I bought hundreds cheap on ebay and a backing pad. They last ages and give good results.

The blue ones are Zirconium, i agree, they do last longer. The only ones to use for stainless steel.

I know I'm doing something wrong. I get crappy finishes using both flap and fibre discs. Maybe the angle at which I hold the grinder is wrong or I should try finer grit ones.

Bit harsh Chunko, I've had a set of Silverline 'leanding' spanners in the van for a few years, none broken and being cheapo's they are still there! W/A

i have had some cheap silverline spanners and some elctrical tools ,battery drill and sander no problems ,although i wouldn't buy discs or rods from them,,,,,flap disc and sanding discs have their uses and blue zircon discs whichever style are great for removing metal.
