I was doing some more practice at the weekend and seemed to be getting more of a fizzing rather than a crackling sound when welding. What's that symptomatic of?
Agree with Fingers, the sound isn't the sign of a good weld, it's when the weld actually looks like it's fizzing that you have a problem, usually either lack of gas or some form of contamination. Post some pics of the welds and we can advise further.

It does depend a lot on the machine. Fizzing is a sign that things are going well on pricier welders. For a Clarke it might imply the wire feed is slightly low and/or the torch is too far from the work especially if a ball of molten metal tends to form on the end of the wire. Cracking on the other hand can imply the wire feed is too fast, and/or that the torch is to far away from the work. Check out the wire speed video for sounds at different settings. Do post photos of welds - they would help more in figuring things out.
