fixing to brickwork

so i am about to take a brake from my shed/workshop build to put up a car port on the side of the house before winter sets in and the motorbikes turn to rust. so pretty simple idea, wooden frame with bitumen on top. its going to up against the side of the house so i want to secure a baton to the brickwork for the roof supports to sit on and here in lyes my problem.

i want to make sure it is secure but i am aware that the brick might be brittle to raw bolts probably wouldnt be a good idea, i have also had experience of raw plug pulling out of the wall over time so i was thinking some sort of chemical anchor and stud so i can just bolt it on

any better ideas/recomendations?

thunderbolts are excellent-a self tapping hex head bolt so you can remove/replace in the same hole ,if the masonry is sound u can even drill close to the edge of the stone/brick.i once bolted a cattle shed stanchion down with 4 12x160mm bolts ,ok the other stanchions were in fottings but this corner one was straight onto bedrock .

Could you do it by using joist hangers instead of a battern? You could secure each joist hanger with about four size 12 or 14 gauge (2 1/2" long) screws with the appropriate size plastic plugs. This way, you have each joist coming off of the hangers supported individually.

i have seen the thunderbolt type fixings but was concerned that they may just shatter the brick, i could use joist hangers but i was trying to keep the drilling of holes to a minimium incase i take it down in years to come and have a swiss cheese looking wall.

hadnt heard of those frame fixings before , are they any good?

Just use concrete screws, they are cheap don't split the bricks and don't pull out like rawl plug type things.. You wont need many holes at all, and they are only 6mm ish anyhow.

Another vote for Thunderbolts, I use them all the time now on all types of bricks and solid blocks.

Another vote forThunderbolts.
It seems so wrong to just put a screw into concrete.
I was sceptical until I saw a mate hanging his motorbike of them while he fettled the rear suspension (A ZXR900)

Not tried thunderbolts but I've done loads of resin fixings using stainless studs, use an SDS drill and don't bother with the hand pumps for clearing the holes - use a compressor and put a flat on the side of the stud to stop it unscrewing from the resin.

Latest job was a fence on a patio with 12mm stainless studs holding 100mm posts to a concrete wall, they're well solid but screws would be a lot quicker, put penny washers under the heads to spread the load into the timber or you might find the screw stays in the wall and pull through the timber.

What have you got to lose if you get some, drill the hole, screw one in (as a test without the battern), then try with all your might (crook end of a crowbar) to pull it back out? Then, you will know.

Data sheets will tell you what the pull out strength is

They won't fall out, I have had 2 small diameter one's holding my bar bender to the wall for the last 2 years, had some heavy force on it many a time and still rock solid.

I use masonary screws for that kind of fixing , I too was unsure when I first met them .Me workbench is fixed the the workshop wall , the kitchen units I made are fastened to the wall , the pantiled roof outside the workshop door is fixed to the rendered hollow block wall with 'em oh and the shed at the top of the garden is held down on the concrete base with masonary screws , great things ....but you must use the correct drill size ......jeff....

Thunderbolts, concrete or masonry screws work great. I've been using them for a few years now in place of the hammer or frame fixing plastic plug type and never had one fail or split brickwork. Just use the correct sds bit to drill the hole and a good torx bit to screw them in and they are no problem.

Always got by with rawl plugs and decent screws myself. If the brick is crumbley just use more of them

Mine was determined to fix a new loo roll holder she'd bought, I gave her the correct sized drill/plugs/screws...... it did last 2 days before falling off

the only thing i was concerned about was using the correct size drill, the only thing i could find on the net says the same size as the bolt which i assume means the core diameter? you would think it would say on the packet ?
