Fixing a micrometer

Bought this on Ebay - already have the imperial version.

Lovely condition but it is knackered. The action is terrible - really stiff - then goes loose - then stiff again - horrid to use.

Seller very sorry - sells bric a brac so no clue. Has offered a full refund but before I send it back is it fixable?

Unwind it a d give a good clean. I have no idea if the speedread numbers will ping out but I inagine there is a little gear that drives them so it sbould be ok.

It looks good condition so I doubt the thread is gone. Have you unlocked the locking bolt, if it has one?

Can you see any light through the faces when zeroed or any witness marks where it has been dropped?

Try holding the micrometer frame firmly down on a worktop and turning the thimble to check if there is wobble in the thimble end. If there is, then it is likely that the threaded screw is bent as a result of the micrometer being dropped. I managed to revive one by removing the spindle, taking off the thimble, working out where the bend was and clamping between fibre jaws in just the right place, and giving it a gentle whack with a club hammer through a piece of wood. Easy to get wrong, though!
