Make sure the threads are clean in the cylinder and on the reg, if necessary blow out the valve with a low pressure airline, dont use the pressure in the cylinder, check the brass cone on the reg for damage, this is where the seal is made, never use jointing compounds and never oil the threads. check for leaks with a weak solution of neutral detergent in water Teepol is recommended, or use a proprietary leak detecting spray

With the plastic bungs out of the bottle threads, just open the bottle for a second to let the escaping gas blow out any rubbish that might be in the thread or tapered sealing face. Dont stand in front of the fitting while doing this. The bottle may have a tap on it or could require a bottle spanner with the square type of fitting.
A spanner will be ok for tightening the regulator, the proper bottle spanners are usually a poor fit on the regulator and can end up rounding off the flats on the regulator.

thanks for replies, they are the answers I was hoping for, common sense primarily. The non-lubrication tip is good though thankyou.
I dont have air line but I do have an air duster can thingy for computer so that should do it I hope. The reg is brand new and looks all nice and shiny, came with a cap to protect the bull nose (correct term?) from damage.
I had thought about opening the valve, but sounds safer not to.
So my intended fitting order would be as follows:
Reg to bottle, welder hose to reg, open bottle tap, open reg up a bit, press trigger and check for gas.
Which way would I turn the reg tap to make it fully closed? clockwise?

I have a feeling cracking the valve is part of BOC's advise when fitting a reg. Sure i have seen it in their literature...

bang on, from there 2007 safety pack, (which I'm sure is pride of place Paul)
"Snifting is the practice of momentarily opening a cylinder to remove dirt and moisture. There must be no source of ignition, and the operator should wear eye protection.."
Its only hydrogen that its not safe practice on.....hmmmm wonder why???

quite acceptable practice tho to "crack" or snift any thing other than hydrogen, with the correct precutions......
BTW compressed air is not recommended as theres always a danger of cross contamination......
