First welds......

Ive recently borrowed a mates MIG set, its an SIP 105 iirc (too lazy to go in garage and check). Put a few welds on some steel for a bit of practice as Ive got some work to do on my car over winter. Its a good few years since I used a welder and I cant seem to get it set quite right. The last one I used was in the bodyshop where I used to work and it was a Cebora I think.

First go on some scrap

Then tried again on some new steel (0.8)

looks like you have little or no gas flow.

Nail on head mate. I had a fiddle and the reg is goosed, its a brand new one too. Just found an old one and fitted it and gas is flowing now............. now Ive ran out of sodding wire

Impatient as ever a quick trip to Halfords later and armed with some wire I had another go now I have gas working too

The welder is an SIP Migmate 105, wire speed set to just a fraction under half and of the 3 switches it is set to high, medium and medium. Using an Argon/CO2 bottle from Halfords until I find out where I can get a pub bottle locally.

looking better it's just practice and migs like clean metal so a good flap disc works well
what's the earth clamp like might be worth a new one about a fiver on fleybay of weld a bolt on to some mole grips and use moles as clamp also you can clamp two bits at the same time

Make yourself familiar with some of the mods used on these welders - you may not need them but once you start to use it the plastic liner will gum up the swan neck and the weeedy roller mech will start to slip.

Wire liner ( less than a £10er from weldquip or aclark one from local MM) and a brace for the feed roller will make your life less troublesome
But once sorted you can do some decent welds on thin car metal.

And an auto darkening helmet helps no end when your crawling about under it.
