first welding project

i don't yet own any equipment as i thought it best to wait to see what would really be needed. as i said in my introduction, i am not a welder but a diyer and i thought understanding welding would be an excellent facet to my current knowledge. we had a guy in replacing some pipes the other day and i am almost certain he wasnt welding very well, but i didnt know so i couldnt say.
i was thinking i could start myself on making a book stand, either something super simple like this:

or something a little fancier like these ones http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Homewares,Kitchen-utensils,Cookbook-stand as i think they look pretty straightforward and i need one. two birds, one stone.
how on earth would i go about starting? and conidering that future welding will most likely be very basic repairs to piping etc or little projects like these, what sort of equipment would you recommend?

Little unsure as to what you mean by welding when you refer to repairing pipes? As for the stand in the picture, there is no welding involved in making that, just forming bends, that can be carried out in a vice. The link to book stands is too wide some are Plastic others are cast iron. We need more info.

I think you are confusing welding with soldering kell. Domestic plumbing is a different process altogether and if it doesn't leak it's soldered fine.

soldering and welding? are you able to explain the differences between the two?
what i mean by hosuehold piping is that i have some water pipes that need replacing (lead to copper) and i have seen some work being carried out on a friends building and they seem to be welding pipes to manipulate them into the shapes etc that they need to connect the house...

The French word for both welding and soldering is "soudure". A welder ( the machine ) is a "poste à souder", a soldering iron is a "fer à souder". Endless possibilities for confusion....
