Im buying my first welder and was wondering if this second hand welder found on craigslist would be a good one to start with? Hobart 180 Comes with an argon bottle and is priced at $400. I would be welding mainly 1/4" steel.
Hi there,
If you're mainly going to be welding 1/4" steel, you'll be working at it's full capacity, for the most part. If you're mostly welding thinner material, and only doing the 1/4" every now and then, then it should be ok.
Goes down to 25A too,- which would be good for bodywork type thicknesses.
Dunno about the price, I wouldn't recognise a dollar, if it didn't say "One Dollar" on it.
Just looked those dollars up, seems to be about £250, so seems a good enough price, assuming it works, that is!
All the Best,
CJ
I was told that if the neck of the bottle didnt have a gas suppliers name on it then no questions would be asked when getting it filled. True or False? But I will ask if there is paperwork.
My bottle says "Hillman Gas". Swapped for an Airco bottle which was swapped for a Linde bottle. That was at Holox, that became Linde and then Air products. Nothing on the bottle says I own it although somewhere I have a receipt.
Now both places I had them exchanged are out of biz.
I just checked out Northern Tools. Looks a bit expensive for a swap at $56 for a #4 bottle (125CF.) The display in the store said "proof of ownership required" but the ones at the counter did not seem to care.
I will check Praxair, we'll see their price (I paid $43 at Linde. last time.)
There is also a DOT test date on the bottle. Make sure it is not expired.
