First weld in anger (so to speak).

Had an off road day last Sunday the 22nd, halfway through though a rear shocker had snapped off.

I couldn't get it replaced in time so decided to weld it back together. Well it worked and didn't break again. Obviously it can't stay just welded so I'll be getting a new one to replace it.

Bit of a bodge but it worked.

Why the failure in the first place? Did you spot any optimistic joining techniques on the original or did side loads do for it?

Haha damn pigeons, I'll get rid of them soon.
It was popping and banging while I was welding it. Though I think the gas is running out as it's a very small bottle......that's my excuse anyway.


Bouncing around off road did it, the bushes are polybush so are a lot stiffer than standard and don't offer as much sideways movement. I will replace them with standard items.

That makes sense. I had a damper fail in an MGB - they'd fitted some new speed bumps in Cambridge and not marked them. At night I hit one at 30mph and the car took off.

The failure was down to a design issue - not enough rotation on the damper top so past a certain bump the top stopped and the side load finished it off. Awful aftermarket dampers and I was glad to see the back of them.
