First time sprayer- a couple of questions

Hi Folks,

I'm in the process of repairing the front end of my 1986 BMW after it had an argument with a deer back in January. I have bought the paint, and I have a compressor and spray gun. I have repaired and filled the bonnet, grafted on a replacement front headlamp frame, and etch primered and prepped the lot (rattle can)

Its two pack paint. I thought yesterday that I'd make a start on account of the hot weather, and had a read of the (rather good) tutorials on here.

First question is that 2k is of course really really dangerous stuff, more dangerous than I thought having read the horror stories. I intend to spray it outside, as I don't have anywhere inside. Purely from a safety point of view, is this as acceptable or do I still need a mask, air fed or otherwise?

Second question is the paint mixing. I have paint, thinners, lacquer, and hardener.
I know to mix the paint with the thinners 1:2, should I add hardener to this and if so what proportion/quantity?
I assume that the lacquer is the top coat, sprayed after the base has dried, do I add hardener to this?

Third question is I don't think my compressor has a water/oil trap- can anybody reccommed one?

Sorry if I sound a bit obtuse here but I want to get this as right as I can!

Oh my, where to start. Base coat is normally mixed 1:1 with thinner. Lacquer is the 2k (hazardous) clear coat which is normally 2:1: 10% but you need to really read the manufacturers instructions. The only thing you should put in your lungs is fresh air to be glib. This definitely goes for your neighbours as well! Having said that, your compressor will struggle to cope with an air fed mask and a spray gun. I think you need to read a few more posts in this section of the forum to learn from those of us who know about the subject, then ask some pertinent questions.

14cfm and at least 150ltr compressor . It looks like yours is 25ltr not much puff with the one you got really ..

What paint are you using? Most online suppliers will include a link to the safety and data sheet for the paint, which gives recommended products and ratios for mixing, drying times, safety notes etc. If you Google your paint to you be able to find the required ratios for activator and thinners.

You should have air fed equipment for 2k spraying but Gerson do a 2k mask which is supposedly OK for a limited number of hours when worn correctly.

I think you have a tricky project for your first attempt at spraying - blending in a repair on a metallic bonnet with a small compressor - so good idea to get as much info as you can before starting.

I just started spraying in my garage this summer, I only spray during week days when no one is about so as not to annoy the neighbours with 1, the 2k fumes and 2, the hell of a noise from my compressors.

So far I have been getting fantastic results after a few balls up at the start, but corn flys from close by fields was a persistent pita.

The water traps were about a £10 from ebay but the oil trap was about £80 from ebay.

x 2 no hardener in basecoat otherwise it won't harden

get a tech sheet from the paint seller and mix it exactly how it tells you
