I bought a Clarke 151TE a few weeks ago and have been laying down runs of weld on scrap metal since then which has overall went well. However, soon after I had a proper little task for the welder.
The underbrace of my car was hitting on the 3-inch downpipe, originally I had planned to just get longer bolts and some spacers or washers, but I decided to weld on spacers to the underbrace so if I need to remove it in the future it's just 1 piece and overall looks nicer.
Anyway, I got hold of some 20mm diameter pipe with a 1mm sidewall, cut 3 half-inch peices to use as spacers, welded them on and ground down the welds. Unfortunately I only took 3 pictures, none of them before the welds were ground down.
Here they are....
Before
After cleaining off all the crap with a flap disc
With spacers welded on and welds ground down
I know I really should have got some pics before I ground down the welds, but I never even thought about it, however as some will be able to tell from the last pic, I need to practice laying finer welds as before I ground them down there was a bit too much weld on there. Think I need to slow down the wire speed or move faster.
Setting used was 2-min, for the first one I used 2-max, but on the edge of the brace I almost burnt though. 2-min gave good penetration without that issue.
Any advice, info, etc appreciated. The underbrace is not structural and purely for stiffening the chassis.
