First night doing TIG at collage, what do you think

Hi all

It was my first night at collage doing TIG, i have completed Level 1 MIG and ARC so now onto TIG.

The following were done with the following set-up:

1. Red tip 1.6mm Tungston
2. 1.6mm Filler rod
3. 50Amps
4. 8L/hour Argon
5. 1.0mm plate

I am really struggling to feed the filler rod in.

These were very flat

Any comments before i go back on Monday and try again?

That's why I do courses Looks okay for a first night. First night of my course, we just did 'no filler' fusion butt welds to get used to the equipment etc. Then filler rod butt joins, lap welds and then inside & outside fillet welds. It's all practice (I have my first fillet weld coupon sitting on my desk at work), and a lot of it is (a) steadiness of hand and (b) timing of adding the filler.

Pic 3 to a lesser degree and Pic 4 to a greater degree look massively undercut, although with a small amount of practice you can do it without filler. So too much power, and not enough filler although I'm no expert. I ran almost all my questionable welds past the tutor to see what I should do to correct it. I have a aluminium coupon on my desk as well and you do get used to identifying issues.

The welds should go the entire length of the plate ...... OK, I was standing behind Paul when he told you that
