First go with 0.8 wire

What an eye-opener! With the power on my SIP Migmate 130 set to 'Max, High' I had to turn the wire feed almost to zero before I got a nice 'bacon sizzling' sound. Even so the penetration on 3/4mm mild was excellent both with the test pieces flat to the heat sink and also up in the open air. Nice!

However I have a couple of questions:

What are the correct dimensions of the shrouds? The current ones seem to be around M7-8 threads and a length of 40mm. Can I go longer with no detriment to the results?
Bearing that in mind does it matter if the tips are then 'buried' deep inside the shroud?
Stand-off: should it be measure from the mouth of the shroud, or should I get shorter shrouds and measure it from the tip?

One of these days I shall weld one thing to another thing and make something else - hopefully a useful something else! We all need to have a goal in this life.

jan if you get longer shrouds you must get longer tips as the air cover for welding would be inside the shroud and not outside the shroud where your welding

SIP Welding tips, 0.6mm or 0.8mm hole, M5 thread

also watch out some sellers sell the push on type for sip and clarke however these wont fit the mig tip or shroud as wont insert past the mig welders pipe at the tip unless you widen the hole wider

Just ordered a few of each of the correct length. I can get through tips at an alarming rate at times while others from the same batch seem to last for ages.

My son and I use 0.8 wire for everything that we do, we don't go thro a lot of tips

i very rarely use .6, i don't have a roller for it, and stitch weld anything under 1.2mm
