First fix electrics?

hi all,
I have just been told by next door that it is now illegal to do your own first fix electrics unless you are part P registered. I wanted to know before i started the rewire of the garage, all i would do is fit conduit, boxes and thread cables that the spark has specified.

If you electrician is going to sign it off then he will check your handywork,otherwise he wont be able to sign it off.

It is my understanding that you can do all the work yourself as long as it is signed off by a suitably qualified sparky.

But finding a sparky who will sign off on work he has not done my be tricky.
It puts them out of work afterall. Unless you know a mate I suppose.

if youre not terminating any cables,it shouldnt be a problem

if your only doing the grunt work to a sparks instruction then your fine and tell next door to but out where there not wanted!

You can even do it all & then get the BCO to check it & sign it off.

u can even do it all and not bother getting anything signed off on your own property if its an extension and it has to go through planning that would require certification or any other person doing the work for u requires to be part p or a registered member of nic eic or the electrical contractors asociation

Thanks, It is just a rewire of an existing garage so in other words one cable to feed a seperate consumer unit instead of the seperate breakers for garage ring main, lights etc. All the cables will be the size specified by dads mate who is a sparkey. All my input will be is fitting boxes, conduit and pulling cables. I will not be terminating cables, fitting sockets, fitting lights and fitting a cu.

A first fix would not need to be signed off - it could be an art instilation until such time it is commisioned - all you are doing is running cables and locating boxes. If a spark has instructed you what to do and how and I was paying him for sign off, I would do the whole job bar connecting to the main fuse box then get him to come in, connect, test and put the paper work in.

You can do the whole job yourself and pay the local authority to sign it off for a fee. If you fail, you are still liable for the fee, if you fail through badly interpreting or ignoring regs, they will tell you they want to see evidence a suitably qualified person has completed remidial action. If you do go down this route, you have to inform and involve the LA before you start.

When people give such statements as your neighbour, I tend to ask them how they are qualified to know such things...

Thanks for the advice, he is a retired spark what knows everything about everything. He tried to tell me how to use a cordless drill even tho he knows i have been using them since i was old enough to lift them (I'm now 16 and a carpenters son)! I cant complain too much as he has chucked loads of work my dads way.
