First few tig welds

Evident I have upset you all due to playing about with the machine and just doing random welds. This is evidenced in the deliberate avoiding of the question. "What do you make of my last few welds". In my eyes they are good but not perfect , I believe their is an argument that I've progressed well. But I'm not a seasoned welder in tig.

If the case is I've upset you all by playing about then I offer no appology. If my action have real effects, I sincerly appolgise for the hurt and world hunger I've subsequently caused.

No ones upset they look fine. It's hard to see them especially as I'm veiwing from a poxy 2.5X4 inch screen on a iPhone. The fillet looks to be the most consistent.

Don't think you've upset anyone, personally didn't see any point in replying as they looked the same as the previous ones but that could be down to the camera etc, don't be so touchy fella

I will add that you need to take a little pride in your work. Cleaning the metal only where the weld is gonna sit is fine but it doesn't present it very well when you want feedback if the rest of the steel is scabby and rusty. You have the tools, that can't be argued but I suggest you take a little advise on board too. If you want positive feed back on your progression then a few little tweaks can help. Nice shiny metal throughout, take a close up of it not a blury pic from 8ft away and as I've said lots of times a more suitable joint to your level of skill so you can put up your best. There are threads on here where you see people's progression and you get to see improvement in every shot. This thread not so much. They look the same so there is no point adding to it with the same comments. If I was to put something up for judgement I'd want to be judged on my best shot.

I'm not gonna sugar coat things like Richard, I too wasnt impressed with the cleanliness and couldnt really see any difference in the welds so didnt comment, you had already recieved really good advice which you ignored is the way i see it !!! then you post amusing, what that meant i havn't a clue ???
Then you pm me asking who supplied my Miller and i told you it was a special deal from one of my suppliers, then you pm'd me again to ask why i was avoiding your question !!!

Must be huge join if that is 8ft away I don't believe you can compare these welds to any others posted.

Does cleaning well beyond what you are welding have a significant effect if it is out of the haz

That looks good, very consistent. Possibly a bit too much heat input, but I'm not sure.

It's not easy to see no matter how far away it is and regardless of whether the cleaning matters or not it is just showing a little pride in your work. You've decided on your own that your improving vastly so no need to bother us with it any more as all advice is been rejected so u know best. I've spent years learning this skill and will help anyone who wants it. I won't however waste time if what I say is rejected and argued with and that sort of attitude will make others think twice about passing comment also.

What people are saying is we can't even see the bead, how can we give advice on a weld if we can barely make it out? Why not take some close up pictures.

For example one of mine on aluminium. You can clearly see the freeze lines aka *dimes*, profile of the weld, toe, etc, etc.

Sorry if i haven't expressed myself particularly clearly im not sure myself what help to expect as i know mostly what im doing wrong, just need pointers on what i have not mentioned.

lets starts from the beginning
here is a butt, lap and fillet

all could do with down slope i have to confess i didn't have any nor did a draw back both are obvious

The butt was to full penetration and tidy on the underside (flat)

The lap i just caught the top edge a couple of times

I know for sure the fillet could of done with a touch more filler it was just about flat so more filler would certainly help, i also lost my arc length towards the end this was down to not being carful enough in regards to the torch cable and making sure it was free to move (makes and obvious and fair example)


i do need to work on consistency in regards to filling. also the fillet could of been run hotter

Tidiest ones yet by a clear mile.
The lap joint is the best example IMO
But joint requires less heat input. Lower the current or go faster.

Lap is nice but a touch more fill to offer a more concave face and prevent cutting the top edge away.

Fillet is a good effort. All 3 could do with a bit more positive on the filling.

cheers that adds to my feelings in regards to filler i have to confess the above where a touched rushed (ashamed) i need to get out of stick welding head and chill out and taking more time with adding filler

i did feel the butt was a touch hot as the pool did spread too far

its a shame the previous 1.5mm tube on 3mm plate is such a poor picture and i do agree tidy up was lousy, i will make more effort. But the tube weld and fillet i couldn't of welded better (the tack was awful, i need a better set up in regards to holding parts)

i abuse my arm muscles and never need to have any accuracy, so it helped me relax my forearms and wrist ive spent a few hours a day just guiding the torch around switched off around tube just to relax them

i am semi self impressed ive used 5ltrs of my 10ltr bottle to get to this stage, i know in reality im still knowhere

cheers i am grateful, i think the frustration was as i knew what the last few better welds looked liked but the picture clearly doesn't show them.
