unless u do classic cars and want the welding doing to a good standard that u cant get using a mig . and its very easy to weld different thicknesses of metal without burn through . I taught myself and can weld tanks up no bother without leaks no grinding of welds needed using oxy acetI have a tip keep all the notes because your unlikely to use the process again once your done at college
TIG made it redundant as regards small neat beads in industry but then few car guys TIG and really modern cars are now getting gluedunless u do classic cars and want the welding doing to a good standard that u cant get using a mig . and its very easy to weld different thicknesses of metal without burn through . OK true enough the only time I ever used it in industry was actually on pipe, because it wasn't deemed safe for electric. That was about 30 years or so ago mind you, special areas it will always have some uses.My HVCA lads have their final weld test this week using O&A on 2" BSP red band pipe @ 6G (HLO-45) There is still a use for O&A in industry.
I did it at college at 16.....that was 28 years ago and have only used the set up for silver soldering since! We teach MIG/MAG, MMA and TIG but no O/A welding. We do teach the cutting though which is useful. We have had no one ask for O/A welding in the 12 years I've been teaching.
probably the price of the gear and bottles would put them off and if they have never used it before its hardly likely they will ever bother and they don't know what there missingI did it at college at 16.....that was 28 years ago and have only used the set up for silver soldering since!
