First Attempt.....

The first attempt with my 160TM today.... played with the settings and think things got better from left where I started to right. Wire speed seemed happiest at 7 and it was set to low (30). Your comments on how I can get this better would be much appreciated!!!

Top pic is looking down, bottom pic is the bottom (so look right to left on this one - penetration seems to improve?). They all seem a bit thin compared to other examples I've seen on here - how can I get these thicker?? (all this sounds a bit rude doesnt it!!)

Not bad at all Rob, travel speed looks a bit on the high side which is why they're skinny and some of the welds look like they were a little low on gas but very good attempts, certainly better than a lot of first ones we see on here.

do you mean I'm moving too fast, or the wire is too quick? - thatks for your help!

Moving too fast, the only issue is that as you slow down you'll be more likely to blow through. You'll soon work out what works best for you. Just out of interest, are you using 0.6 or 0.8mm wire there?

using 0.6.

Am I better slowing down moving, but increasing the wire - would this have the desired affect? (off back into garage soon to try!!)

0.6 is good, that sheet you're practising on is pretty thin. You're better off trying different combinations of travel speed and wire feed to get a good understanding of how the two affect the weld appearance. Wire feed speed looks pretty good, you're getting nice clean welds with virtually no spatter. You're virtually there, a bit of fine-tuning and your welds will be spot on .

thanks. one thing is the gas, not really sure how high/low to have this, but if the welds seem ok then might not touch it. it hisses when i press the trigger anyway!!

if you are using disposables about as high as it goes! If using proper bottles about 10l/m (i think)

i'm using a Bl**dy big cougar 5 bottle (waist high and does not like to move!), but the guage I got with the 160TM does not have any feed guage on it - just the total pressure.... weldequip, am i reading this right??

Hi rob! for the second pic, looks great but i would increase the wire speed a bit OR drop the amps a bit...then they will be purrrrfect!!

If it's a single guage unit it should have a knob to regulate the gas flow with measurements along it's shaft.

when im welding i normally have my gas flow between 12-15 bars but its horses for courses some may have it higher some may go lower ;o)
