My daughter in law wants me to make a fireguard to keep my new grandson and the cat out of the fire. She doesn't want the usual mesh job but would like something a bit more arty, i.e. laser cut, but given my lack of talent and workshops I don't know where to turn - any ideas gratefully accepted.

to be honest the mesh serves a purpose i wouldnt want to change this design however to make it arty easy enough attach some steel stencils to it however one problem it will block the heat comeing from the front of the fire and they can become hot to the touch

arty then use the same steel but shape it into a design of your own however expect to laquer it afterwoods as fingers always pull or tug on the fireguards or climb up them to stand

You can buy perforated sheet with more intricate designs, or you could get a firm to laser cut you some thing, or pick up a carcus from scrap bin at a laser cutting company.

The frame is 30mm box section which is welded together

The gate which is in the middle of the frame is an upside down U with a thick flatbar along the bottom so that it isn't obviously a gate

The curvey bits are nothing more then 30 x 5mm flat bar which i then bent up with my DIY ring roller

That fire guard is very nice ," strong and stable"...looks good too....

The thing I would point out:
Mesh cools down as fast as it heats up.

Anything in bigger sections could potentially heat up to a dangerous temperature if left a little close to the fire.

Not getting anywhere with this, daughter in law has now decided that something with 5mm vertical bars, top and bottom rails and a gentle curve either end is what she wants. I haven't got the gear of facilities to do it myself at the moment - can anyone recommend someone to make one for me? I've found a firm in Bath but they want £550!

I'd be telling her to either order her own else do things the old fashioned way, and actually teach the bairn to stay away from the fire. The cat will sort itself. They usually have the gumption to avoid hot things.

lol girls i know as ive got one of them

i have the equipment to do them but so will you if you think correctly use the 2 bars in the vice method if you have one for bending the bar to shape and curving it into a slow curve
