Finish on 304 stainless...

I have an idea for a new line, want to use 304 stainless, 3mm thick, in a 2B (dull/dull) finish as it's cheapest. Product will be a bracket style thing with plasma cut parts and a slot/tab style connection which will be Tig welded from behind so the face is clean.

What would be a good way of getting a brushed finish on both sides of the parts by hand?

I think brushed is a pretty standard finish, high gloss is not for this job and I'm not sure what blasting will look like - I don't have a cabinet yet but could get one if it would look good?

Any thoughts??

perhaps a bit late now but it may well be cheaper in the long run to buy the steel in the required finish? Hand polishing/linishing is generally slow and tedious?

Trouble with that is that after its plasma cut, de-burred and cleaned up, it almost needs re-graining anyway. The small number plaques I sell are pre-grained and still need hand finishing. Water jet would probably be ok but way too expensive.

That tool would also allow me to do some creative graining patterns if needed.

I laser a lot of stainless and when it comes off if it's already polished beforehand itl be perfect coming off any stainless fab we do is pre polished then cleaned at the welds to match in

Every green Bosch i've ever owned has gave up the ghost after a short period of life.
TBH most of those attachments you'd probably get the same for your standard drill

Not sure about best power tool but I remember watching a car program where they removed some dents and refinished a delorean which has the brushed stainless look and it was like a large loose flap wheel they used seemed to be effective.

Similar to the Bosch you have ordered but on a more manly scale. Good bit of kit with variable speed control.

You can get various belts in different grades and materials.

Yes, very similar tool, the Bosch will have a years guarantee on it so if it fails it goes back, after a year if it really works then I can look at the bigger versions.

I use these flap wheels with variable speed electric die grinders. I finish off with a bit of WD40 on the wheel - messy but helps with the finish.

As Graham suggested one of those flap wheels in a drill or die grinder is great for giving that brushed look. Very effective in a pillar drill for small parts. They are effectively a load of scotch pads mounted to an arbour.
