Hello gents im in my last year of welding at college level 1&2&3 welding and fabrication 2850/305/355 city and guilds and will be soon looking into finding a full time job in the welding and fabrication industry to gain more knowledge and experience from others in the trade and would like to eventually open my own welding and fabrication workshop but the only problem is there are no companys or people out there that are to willing to give you a chance and without much experience you dont stand chance and i think also my age goes against me i look forward to your positive feedback many thanks phil

I'm afraid phill it's a case of perseverance. Keep knocking on doors and keep speaking with people. This is the way we start out nowadays because your right it's hard when your fresh out of college. A lot of employees don't want to train any more they want to start someone up, throw them a drawing and start making money straight off. You've got to throw arguments into the mix as to why they should invest time into training you on the job. A good one is you haven't fallen into a bad habit yet. lots of time served welders like to do things there own way and think they always know best. which doesn't always agree with the company.
Think of things about your personality and work ethic that you can put forward to people when your talking to them. You've got to sell yourself as better than the experienced guy. its a hard task but you will get there.
I know a company In Rotherham that tend to be looking for mig guys on a regular basis. Pm me if you want details and then go knock on the door.

As a company we always look to train our own apprentices, and touching a little on what Richard says, it is about not bad habits we want and this is a sure fire way of getting people without bad habits.

If you can find a company with this ethos then badger them a little to take you on, especially if they do general fabrication where you get exposure to as much of a variation of types of work as possible.

If you're down this way (Essex) I could put a word in at a few companies local where I've left on good terms. You'd have to pass some small weld and drawing tests though.
