Finding snares?

We've just found someone has been setting snares in the woods near us, some have animals in them, I want to see if I can find any behind my garden in the estate woods so what's the best way to do this?

Free running snares are legal are they not?

Self locking ones I think are the only ones that are banned?

A long stick, a hockey stick might be ideal.

have found the clamping type Gin traps...? in the past....collected them up and destroyed them....

It's a private estate without any games keeper as far as I know. It backs into a lot of people's gardens though so I don't want my cat in one!

I put a Havahart box trap in a building of mine where groundhogs were getting in....

One day, I open the man door, and hear Meowing like all get out.

Got the neighbors cat.....I talked nicely to him and let him out, but boy did he run off fast.

2 years on, almost every day, I pull in my driveway, and he's there on my field (probably mousing), and he bolts away.

I still try to talk nicely to him, but to no avail.

Setting snares is about spotting runs, so finding snares is the same skill

As others have said, find the runs and if they’ve been set with any sense, you’ll find the snares. Horrid, horrid things.

Never liked trapping, it’s a nasty way for anything to die. Had a lad get permission to shoot rats on a small holding I also shot, caused an absolute crap fest when a member of the public spotted the gin trap he’d set NEXT TO THE FOOTPATH. Luckily for him he never returned (at least while me or the land owner was there) as he’d have had big gun broke across his back

private estate not much you can do other than report the traps being used and take photos as evidence
if you destroy them its not worth it however if you make them inusable so there not trapping anything is a different matter

as goes for your cat keep it in your own garden with its own run as you cant really complain about it

i sometimes use them when get overun with rabbits along with shooting them eating our lassses expensive flowers the dog gets them as well

I am "red neck farm boy" - a Rabbit to me just looks like lunch!

But I don't like the idea of snares...

Clean kill is where it is at - sight hound into a long net/priest or a gun - ferret/terriers into net and a "priest".

I would use snares - if Tescos/Sainsburys/Waitrose/Lidl were permanently shut and I had to family to feed.

I not got a problem with field sports at all - but I was brought up to dispatch an animal quickly - my long dead Grandad would not have any of this lingering death - I would have been chastised as child. When fishing with my Father as child for trout - when it was out of the water - it was priority to finish the job with a priest quickly...

If there is some kind of permitted access onto private land borrow a thermal and spot who's doing it. Ask landowner first if they have given permission to anyone. Theres a estate near here, 7000 acres no keeper, but a few folk have permissions.

I control the foxes on a local free range poultry farm and I occasionally use snares , but I check them every morning and despatch anything caught. With night vision and thermal there's little need for snares.
