Filling bottle BOC

I know its taboo but I got a BOC Y argoshiled bottle with a welder which is MT now, I know I should open an account and get it filled but is there any other way yo get this filled, else I will just return it to my nearest boc depot?

Why don't you go to a local engineering company and pay for a swop, If your bottle is fairly new there shouldn't be a hassle with BOC taking it back from the company.

Not all companies will do this, its a bit of hit and miss, when you do find one, at least you'll know wghere to go next time it runs out

I've been told that BOC have the bottle numbers computerised now,so they know what ones are where.It may have something to do with "traceabilty" required for ISO acreditation.I think if someone did an audit and pulled up a number,they'd have to know if it was in stock,on loan,waiting clean after return,etc.
At one time you could get a customer to swop them,as they were just counted in and out,by BOC.

rent a bottle of the same stuff and take your 'other' one back a week or so later.if they say something then make up an excuse.

ive just been given a bottle that was dumped with a load of calor bottles outside my mates unit and planned to do it.

I don't think you'll gain anything as you'll have to pay a years rental up front,and I don't think you get rental refunds on full size cylinders.

I thought you could take out a bottle temporary contract,That is what seimens used to do when I worked along side them on power station jobs.
P.S. Didn't somebody post a while ago that the hire firm HSS would exchange bottles,no questions asked.

If it's not yours just be honest and take it back. Shouldn't be a problem for you.

I remembered that too, I don't know if all the branches that do gas are that easy going but it must be worth a try.

I tried HSS and they didnt seem to interested in doing it.. they said I would have to contact BOC and gave me there number. probably depends on who you get on the day eg someone that does back handers or someone that does things by the book.

Not yet Dave, although this apparently will be happening very soon.. end 2012/start 2013.

BOC have lost thousands of bottles over the years, and many people/companies are holding more bottles than they are being billed for... This is one way they can try to get them back.

I think the HSS thing might vary with branch as well as luck of the draw regarding staff. It's come up on the forum several times now, first time i tracked down my nearest HSS branch that dealt with welding kit and was quoted VERY different prices to those being banded about on the forum. Gas itself was more expensive and regardless of BOC account/having a cylinder to exchange they wanted more in daily rent than BOC want on a weekly basis or something daft like that anyway

With regards to the cylinder tracking deal... a couple of mates/colleages of mine got caught back when the tags first started appearing. One of them was doing the ol' two bottle shuffle, the other was trying to do someone a favour by swapping out an 'aquired' cylinder on their own account (so same deal as the two bottle shuffle). In both cases it was oxy acetylene, one of them might have daft enough to try it with an ancient cylinder but the other one wasn't- they had proper rented ones 'supplimented' with aquired ones and rotated fairly regularly. They use the same agent as me, no one there has ever questioned/checked anything of mine but then i get through much less gas (and no acetylene) as there's only one of me

Erm, our company is guilty of that got a couple of bottles we don't pay for
