So I have had my welder since Sunday and have been using it after work for an hour or so. Really enjoying it i must say but im having issues. I have just started arc welding so have patience after advice and basic tips. Been practicing straight runs and they have been ok. The slag very often peels of it self and i have been able to perform a few butt welds that have been all good. Now i have tried a few fillet joints and im having issues with slag inclusion as you can see from the pics. They are nasty looking things! But I cant put my finger on the cause. I know i can try to put the rod down angle wise to keep the slag back but sometimes i see the slag pop underneath the rod past the pool and in front of the rod. I know its the slag as its dark and you can see it swirling around. So what i tried to do was not to hold such a tight arc in the corner of the joint. So I created a bigger molten pool and a bigger arc to try to force the slag back. This helped and i was getting welds like the ones above width wise. Not to thin not to thick. But now my issue was that very often my arc would die out as i was laying a bead then start again for a second. Im guessing this causes slag inclusion as well ? You see when i do straight runs or a butt joint i can simply arc up and run the rod and i can actually feel the rod touching the metal as its in the molten pool. Is this what you should be aiming for in all positions and joints? Pressing the rod against the pool and feeling the surface of the material. Im using an easi arc clarke welder and some machine mart 6013 rods. Running it about 90 ish amp wise. 2.5 rods
