Really? 15 years and not a single no visible deformity? I'm buying my next set of wheels off you then if you can determine quality with the naked eye...

Question I have to ask though is if you haven't had them crack tested, how do you know there isnt anything there that is too small to see normally?

If you have ever seen an NDT x-ray of a wheel you would be very concerned indeed, as castings very often have numerous flaws and defects from new. When carrying out a repair its simply impossible to NDT test wheels being repaired, and I would guess when you are repairing castings, you probably find it as easy as I do to see any further cracks close to the one being repaired?

I wonder how well the welders insurance will pay out in the case of a fatality occurring from the repair failing in use at high speed?

My guess is they will wave the non disclosure card

How about corporate manslaughter charges?

Now viewed against a few £ 50 repairs?

If I was sure I was carrying correct cover I think I should want proper testing at the very minimum. With record keeping and contractual written agreement and warnings

Guess what? I have zero interest in such work though I did some as paye about 25 years back

Like it or not the roads are not likely to improve, wheels will continue to get damaged, and repair work will get carried out more and more frequently. All the major wheel refinihing operators provide repair work (£100 per crack approx), so maybe it would be a good idea to look at the most effective way of carrying repair work out, rather than saying it cant be done, or is far more dangerous than a crack occuring in the first place?

I was referring to the crack test comments not the fact they are/are not repairable.
If you think cracks stick to rule books and are easy to all see and predict that's fine.
I certainly wouldn't entertain bringing one your way.
You'd weld it with a mismatch filler, you'd do no prep work to determine any other damage and you'd hand it back saying it was like a brand new wheel.
I'm leaving this now as its making me cringe and the op hasn't replied for some time so he's bored too of a re dragged subject.

Let me make it clear I was doing such things and more to wheels in the 80s
I never said it couldn't be done - more suggested it perhaps shouldn't?
If I am ever up on corporate manslaughter charges or find out my insurance likes to say " non disclosure" I trust it will be over more than a hundred quid repair

Interesting that you repaired an alloy brake drum with 12% Si brazing rod? I guess before charging your customer for the repair, you had the metallurgy of the drum checked to find out if it was a weldable grade of material?

Lots of the drums on old race cars were cast from non weldable material, and while its possible to stick almost anything together with 12%, if its a non welding grade, then failure is very likely.

Essentially without knowing what that drum is made of, you are taking a big risk carrying out any sort of weld repair on it, and the likely effects of any failure if the car to which it is fitted is ever actually driven, could be far more serious that a tyre slowing deflating due to a crack in a alloy rim opening again.

buy a dye penetrant kit 3 tins dye /cleaner/developer you will be amazed what it shows up i take it you weld them full pen weld one side and dig out opposite with a course carbide burr till you are into clean metal then weld it let it cool and dye pen weld and surrounding area

just had a thought would a regular PMI test machine work on ali works on ferrous and non ferrous material had my old v twin rods done /ferrite 97/nickel1 /manganese2

thats what i was thinking when i mentioned about testing after welding
