Sorry, over my head. I did start reading a disc world book once, but after a few pages wondered why. Nuff going on in the real world, without reading about invented ones. Same with LOTR.

Reminds me of an estate agent in the Ware area of Herts. Needed to demolish a house, so, rather than pay a proper outfit, he bought several crates of booze, invited all the blokes he knew round and handed out picks and sledge hammers. Amazing thing was, they all survived.
This was a bit before H & S was thought of.

Few lads in the Regt were moonlighting on summer leave. Got paid to gut out old cinema before demolition. Gaffer wanted to get safe out to resell it. They start in the morning, picks, hammers, prybars. Nah.
Lunch, go to pub and hold conference.
One sez he has some Plastic Explosive in his shed. Yeah, 4oz of that should shift it. Nuther round. Yeah, 8oz should shift it. Nuther round. Yeah, whack a pound round it, that'll shift it.Nuther round, yeah, just stuff the lot in.
Time gentlemen please.
Right, lets gerrit done.
Placed PE round safe, retired to behind office wall, pressed tit, wall fell on em and safe stayed put. The roof slates had been replaced with riggly tin, they blew off and frisbeed onto the police station.
They actually got away with it as some of em played rugby for the brigade and the brig was a rugby man.
They were forever referred to as the Hole in the Wall Gang.
As was typical of the Regt in them days, they were sent on a Royal Engineers demolition course

my Dad was in RE's in the 40's and part of their job was, they had to get rid of explosives that was past their sell by and used to have burn it, in those days there were no records to speak of well most was burnt , some, was 'given' to the local arab fishermen in exchange for 'services' they used to pack some in baki tins with a slow fuse, the fishermen would swim out, set them, put the lids on and swim back, the tin would sink, plenty of time then little thuds deep under water, not really noticeable, just abit of aripple on the surface then they would go back and pick up the stunned fish.
Jobs a good one every ones happy.
That was all working fine, till they started with some new stuff that they didn't realise Floated !! Dad said the bloke was still swimming about 5 yds up the beach with these tins happily bobbing round, there was quite a series of explosions and it blew some windows out.
It apparently sparked a bit of a security scare. the officials though they where being shelled from somewhere.

My personal one was we were setting up a tented camp on a coral Island, we had to use xplosive digging to get the latrines and "desert roses" (pee funnels going into the ground). I was a lowly tom but I was the xplosives bloke and had been told 4oz max. The corporal in charge wanted to ramp the amount up to get the job done. OK sez I, but I want the charges sandbagging to keep the fragments down, fair enuf sez the boyz.
Two crafty gits who did not want to hump sbags about filled theirs with brush. We took cover each time by tree right next to the ossifers tents. So I blows me whistle (Acme Thunderer of course) and fires, the drill is you also shout LOOK UP (for any falling lumps) -we spots a lump of jagged coral the size of a cabbage winging its way over. Life goes into slomo as we watch ithead for the camp water supply which is a 5000 gallon inflatable tank.
It bangs down on the tank, and bounces off-phew-nah-there is slight delay and whoosh-5K gallon tsunami heads for ossifers tents, goes round the bosses (Major) tent and straight through the looeys tent. The earth was a reddish colour, made a right slurry and hideous mess.
Anyway, bit later we find that some of the leaves on some stubby tree types can cause nasty blisters. Cut tops off and burn em, so I'm told to use detcord-looks just like plastic washing line- yeah- I'm rigging the trees and he hangs his wet kit out, everybody is in the safety point accounted for, I fire, and a load of shredded kit goes up.
Month later, he goes for a dump on the deep trench latrine at about 0200. Some of the lads on stand-down have been drinking the local rum; one still has one of the thunderflashes we used to create scary bangs without injuring anyone.
Drops it in the DTL, it flashed the methane off and wrecked the DTL, not to mention scared the you know what out of the bloke sittin on it.
He said he was quitting the mob when we got home and was going to train to be a brain surgeon as that would guarantee he would never see any of us again.
He in fact became a solicitor.

indeed he did, and it was farcical at times- days when many magistrates were ex colonels/brigadiers-he always wore his regimental tie if he knew there was an ex officer on the bench.
Thought it had backfired once as we were up for kidnapping the cardboard cut out of Colonel Sanders and demanding 3 buckets of fried chicken for his release-the old boy on the bench spots his tie and (think Colonel Square in Dads Army) belts out " I SEE SIR, FROM YOUR NECKTIE, THAT YOU YOURSELF WERE ONCE ONE OF THESE PIRATICAL PARACHUTISTS, AND NO DOUBT SIR, YOU ARE GOING TO SAY IT WAS DUE TO A CASE OF HIGH SPIRITS??
