feeler gauges

Hi all,

I'm looking for some decent sets of feeler gauges to make some shims from. Tempered is a must and it would be nice if they were more accurate than 0.05mm increments as I need quite a high degree of accuracy but can only use 1 shim so can't build up with multiple leafs.

Any recommendations?

If you know what size you need buy the correct size shim steel,

Other than that I wouldn't buy a top quality set of feelers to cut up.

Unfortunately I don't know the sizes yet, I could in theory need 16 different sizes, but that's unlikely which is why I'm reluctant to buy shim steel.
Seen the mitutoyo range and it is a bit much for my needs although three sets of them would still be cheaper than the actual shims from the manufacturer.

we use kenedy feelers in work, they appear to be good quality and accurate

would suggest you shim the gap with gauge plate / shim stock (reels of the stuff not to ruin expensive sets) then when alignment is perfect; measure accurately the shape & thickness of the shim & have some single, solid pads ground exactly for the location. Shim stock is very hard any way, gauge plate is tough more than hard. We use this method for alignment of gas turbines, within 0.0001" - I doubt you'll be wanting more accuracy than that. what is the application?

of course, another way would be to fix jacking brackets to the machine to be moved, using fine thread bolts to manipulate movements. When the final, desired alignment is attained, measure and fabricate single shim as described above. Failing that, chocking the machine with a resin compound such as 'chock-fast' is a fab way to go. no shrinkage, easy to do & simply great. again, all this depends on the application.
