Faulty dial caliper?

Never had one of these before.
Tesa swiss made. Looks in good condition
BUT - the actual dial part has a problem. There is 20 thou of free play in it.
When I turn the dial to zero it is almost as if I am screwing it in and out. Free play disappears but then it binds on the rack. Does it just need adjusting or send it back?

I can't answer your question, but I don't trust dial calipers at all. In a previous job I had one at work (a good brand) and a gear jumped so it gave an erroneous reading. I stick with vernier calipers or (decent) digital ones. So my answer would be send it back and get something different! Sorry: that probably doesn't help.

Tesa are pretty much one of the best. They do service their stuff in the UK if I remember correctly

This one hasn't jumped. The whole dial is loose and moves a quarter of an inch side to side.
