The cheap readers are all the same, nothing wrong with them if you can understand/decipher the red herrings they can throw at you.

I got one of the AldiLidl ones a couple of years ago, for £15 it's useful but doesn't always reset codes - YMMV

Cheap code readers are better than nothing but they do have their limitations, they often have trouble pulling up stored fault codes which make diagnosing intermittent faults a bit more challenging. For example my mother in law‘s Astra kept cutting out and my code reader found no faults, I had to drive the car for half an hour until the fault appeared then it was able to detect it, faulty EGR valve.
I have ISTA for BMW which is their dealer level software, it cost about £80, but obviously that’ll only work with BMW’s but it’s very effective.
The VAG equivalent is VAGCOM which costs similar but again will only work with VAG cars.
Also the above requires a bit of research in how to set them up and use them, the setup on a laptop is not exactly intuitive.
If you can afford it there are some very good code readers available now for less than a couple of hundred quid which will do a lot more than just diagnose basic engine management faults, for example airbag and ABS.

Have a cheap £12 ebay one, worked to clear codes on a Renault clio and on my Freelander 2 so it's already paid for itself. It wouldn't do anything with VW stuff though. The Rosstec version of vagcom is about £300, a bit steep, but my brother has one so that's solved a few issues without going near a dealer.
