Farting Around With E7018 Rods

I cut off a short length of 5mm thick mild steel, to practice some beads on. Do you call this a 'coupon', even in the UK?

Using DCEP @ 90 Amps with 2.5mm E7018 rods, I tried for a few straight beads. I never bothered to remove the mill scale, on this attempt.

I used both hands to hold the rod, but I was getting a fair bit of heat through the glove, causing me to be a bit jerky with the rod. Wire brush and Dettol certainly helped with removing the slag.

Thoughts?

When I'm stick welding I use Tig gloves, and I have an old set of gauntlets I have cut up to use as a shield, so when I'm using my left hand to steady the rod I generally run it between index and middle finger like a pool cue, and I use a strip of gauntlet between the fingers to keep the heat away.

You could also buy a generic Tig finger that would do the same

When I'm stick welding I use Tig gloves, and I have an old set of gauntlets I have cut up to use as a shield, so when I'm using my left hand to steady the rod I generally run it between index and middle finger like a pool cue, and I use a strip of gauntlet between the fingers to keep the heat away.

You could also buy a generic Tig finger that would do the same

I'm using a generic red leather pair from Screwfix. My hand nearest the rod was about 4 inches away. Obviously, I was keeping it at the distance, letting the rod travel through my fingers.

They aren't ideal to be honest, I learnt the hard way that cheap gloves aren't nearly as good as they should be...good gloves aren't necessarily expensive, my Tig gloves cost about 18 quid I think and aren't the best in the world but I can weld a lot longer with them before I feel the heat

I always thought TIG gloves were lighter duty, as compared to the usual welding gloves?

shorten the arc length and slow down your travel speed.
You need to almost touch the material with the tip of the rod.

Watch the puddle while welding, not the end of the rod. Most people who start with stick welding start with watching the rod.
The important bits happen in the puddle.

angle looks a bit steep as well, more straight up would help.

They are, hence the use of a cut up strip of gauntlet on the rod guiding hand...can't beat Tig gloves for dexterity though.

Good quality tig gloves will keep away more heat than you would expect, I was quite surprised when I started buying half decent gloves just how much better they were than the cheap ones

which tig gloves do you recommend ?

I use Tegera 130A gloves for most things they are great to wear and better insulated than they look.
However I am very aware that they are not as insulated as a great big pair of MMA gloves and you need to be awake when stick welding and aware of what will be quite hot and what is really hot and avoid holding the latter for too long.

which tig gloves do you recommend ?

I like ansel branded gloves, granted if you grab a red hot bit of metal it's going to be a bad day, but I find they can take heat better then the cheap ones without shrinking to your hand so much.

It's also beneficial to remember welding gloves are there to let you hold hot metal, they are there to protect against UV and spatter, plus accidentally contacting hot metal
