I have been pleased with all of the Fakita stuff I've bought and had not seen one of these until today.

I wouldnt as that appears to be a cheapy rubbish dc motor. Generally any decent Fakita will be a brushless motor.
I have an angle grinder attachment which works well enough although I've had little need to use it.

At that price they are almost consumables, i have one of the corded silverline ones its a tad underpowered but great tool none the less, had two b&d ka900e previously and both had the same problem with the belt eventually eating the belt retainer/guard on the side of the tool.

I also have the silverline and use it loads. That has the same belt 'finger' and adjustment mechanism as the silverline, but the belts are quite a bit shorter... if that matters.

10x330 does seem to be a really common belt size, which is good!

In a way, that is not Fakita as it looks like nothing in Makita's product range. It is simply something that accepts a Makita battery.

I already have the Silverline one and also the Evolution one. I thought having a cordless power file would be useful at some point but maybe I'll wait until they produce one with a brushless motor. Thanks for the info.

The one in the ebay link above has the same roller, platen, 'finger' and adjustment mechanism as the silverline one, albeit the ebay one is shorter. As the silverline one works well, this (the one in the ebay link) should too, assuming that the motor is up to it.

the one in the ebay link takes 10x330 belts which are a common belt size = good news.

I wonder what the availability is of spare nose pieces. They are a consumable item and wear out/break off through time.

The spares availability does put me off unbranded stuff a bit. I wore out the rubber end cylinder on my first B and D powerfile - it wears a bit then the belts start to slip off. Spares readily available and they were about a tenner to replace last time I looked. Apart from that it has been faultless despite being used only for heavy duty stuff like rust removal and dressing down welds. Bought a bargain second one on Ebay cos I liked it so much.

We did buy a Ryobi cordless powerfile when they were on offer but have to say it has been a bit disappointing. Feels underpowered and the aftermarket belts don't fit as tightly.

I did buy a cheap corded Katsu mini cutter/grinder which has been excellent so far. I do think cheap tools are often worth a punt, but best treated as consumable items that you hope you get your money's worth from before they go kaput.

My understanding, which may well be wrong, is the Makita batteries are just batteries, the charging "cleverness" is in the charger. DeWalt have BMS built into the batteries and this makes the tools more complicated

Wrong.

Makita bms is all in the battery. It will shut down power to the tool before the battery gets too low.

Dewalt supposedly has some of the bms in the tool. So if it's not a genuine tool that doesn't have the proper bms fitted you could run your battery too flat.

I bought one of those fakita file things, the picture I saw of it was a blue thing that looked like a makita.
I got a brown thing that doesn't look like a makita and has it has a battery adapter with it to take the makita battery.
The whole bit the bands go on can be wobbled about but it all seems to work OK.
