One of my colleagues used to work on boat engines years a go and they had a guy die because he was in the engine and got crushed as someone rotated the crank.

That's really sad

My mate was cutting the ring gear off a 2m diameter fly wheel.

Dipstick was cutting at the 3 o clock position. As he went through it the gear dropped down and snagged on the disc. It shattered and pieces were embedded in his face. He was only wearing specs

The bit I find amazing is that it looks like it was never planned that they would do that in situ given that the straps were rubbing on pipes and they were welding brackets to the base plate.

As mentioned, Stretch bolts, Extended length of thread on the bolts to take the hydraulic jacking gear, Pump up to the required pressure, then the nuts which are usually round can be tightened by hand or with a short tommy bar, release the pressure and job done. One of our power stations tried stretch bolts on the steam chest cover bolts, Five and a half inches diameter, Brilliant to tighten when new, But Impossible to remove after a few years of heat and scale build up. Final straw was the jacking gear broke under pressure and launched itself up to the roof, Very fortunate nobody was near it at the time or they would have been definitely killed,

On things like cyclinder heads the jacking is actually built in to the head on some. You stretch all the bolts at once, hand tighten them and release the hydraulic pressure.

Most of that job in the video will have been done on the run too, so it would be hot and noisey in there while its been done.

This was the world I served my time in....big engines havent really changed that much, its all the fancy controls that make it complicated. I actually think it easier to work on a 10000 hp diesel than a 100 hp one.

Moving from shipping to the world of oil and gas FPSOs .....the jobs seem to be far more complicated by more chiefs than indians. And worse still many chiefs who have never actually done a job, but seem to want to have an input into everything. Even when you become one of the cheifs there is still far to much meddling.

I was on an FPSO and we had a big diesel out of service for 18 months, 4 visits from the makers...I took great pleasure in telling the man who had been in charge of the hole job from the office how we fixed it, 3 months after he left. My boss wouldnt let me send him the rag that came out of the sump...kept getting sucked in to the pump suction as the engine was loaded up. With the stand by electric pump or at slow speed it was fine. He'd ordered parts to the total of 360000 dollars to fix this.

I did say at multiple meetings in my experience of big diesels its usually something simple.
