Has anyone else had this issue? I can't get product liability to sell my products.
I'm a qualified engineer, but I work in IT. In the evenings and weekends I work on personal automotive projects and over the years I've made a lot of niche type products. Example, when I made a pin socket for removing wheel bearings I made three and would like to put the other two on eBay. You probably know that some OEM tools cost £100 but can be made on a lathe for a third of that price. Some of my parts are more serious, such as parts that are used in 4x4 racing.
The insurance brokers I've spoken to have said they can't insure me. Parts used in cars for racing, they say I have no chance of getting insurance. Some insurance companies have even raised concern about the wheel bearing tool :/
And yet there are dozens of small workshops around the UK that are making strengthened axle shafts, suspension kits, gearbox parts and things that are used in 4x4 racing. I know some of these workshops, I know they are one man bands earning mediocre salaries who I don't think could even easily afford to pay a few grand for product insurance.
The brokers have said that they can insure fabricators, where people come to the fabricator with a design to make. But if I'm designing my own products then I'm liable for the design and they won'ty insure me.
