May be in the wrong section, but a haulage company i deliver to was looking for something like this...

...or something that would perform the same task, theres a few different designs on the net(an attachment that slides over forks to lift carpets). Think they priced some and its around the £800 mark, and they were looking to get 4 for different depots.

Not sure if anyone would be able to give a better quote, but thought i'd see if anyone could make them and a few £'s. Would have a go myself but my welders not up to the job amp wise...for me to feel confident enough in the welds anyway.

Not sure how mental to go on the finish(paint/powder coated etc), its more just the actual fabrication thats the main priority. Probably Scotland would be better as their depots are based and they operate here, but could say to them about collecting from down south.

Might be one of they cases where thats the best price, but just thought i'd ask/give a member the option.

Yeah, just edited last post at the same time. Its an attachment to slide on forks to lift carpets.

Some box section, some cross bracers and a tube/pole. Maybe not the best/clearest/biggest pic.

As there is lots of regulations for lifting equipment and processes to follow £800 doesn't seam unreasonable to me

Don't bother. For 800 quid, less a bit of discount for haggling, its not worth messing with. It would need CE marking, testing and comes under Loler.

Theres a place next to one of my other drops that repairs mining equipment and digger buckets etc and i mentioned to them when i was going past yesterday. They were mentioning certification etc but they werent 100% sure as its not really their area.

I've made them but not recently. carpet is heavy stuff especially when you've got 4m or 5m of it sticking out on the front of a truck, theres a lot of stress on that pole, and it needs doing properly and certifying under LOLER.
£800 is fairly reasonable I think for a tested and properly designed product.

Think what it's like holding a cricket bat at arms length. That's a lot of weight on there and not a job for a DIYer...

I made some something similar about 15 years ago for MFI, made to their specs, from memory it was a 400 mm square of 25mm plate that hooked over the front of the fork lift frame rather than the going on the forks, a 150mm * 25mm disk welded to the front to spread the load and then a 2500mm * 90mm round bar welded to this.
I made 12 I think, biggest problem was finding some one to turn the point on the end of the end of the bar. Found a retired farmer locally who had a massive Ward lathe in his barn who did them all for £20 a piece I think.
I seem to remember charging something round the £400 mark for each one bare metal and made a healthy profit.

A carpet boom. That takes me back.

The ones I recall were attached in place of the forks rather than shoving onto the forks, but it was in a carpet factory and that's mainly what the trucks were used for.

It really looks like the kind of thing you buy from someone geared up to make them, or buy second hand from someone dealing in lifting equipment.

Similar principle to a big bale spike, so it might be worth talking to an agricultural machinery supplier.

But if they need to be certified as lifting gear for this particular application, it could be cheaper to buy them ready made.
