Fabricating a Trailer

My grandfather has asked me to fabricate him a trailer for them to carry the equipment to the various rally's his motor club organise/steward. They have already provided a tow hitch and a single axle, however before I do a few drawings and purchase any steel for them does anyone know if there are any specific safety standards that must be adhered to as it will be going on public roads? I have done a quick search on Google but I cant find anything in particular.

every thing falls under the "construction and use regulations" new built trailers have to be inspected by VOSA before use.

Thanks for that I'll do a little more research, I have no doubt that anything I produce would be strong enough for the roads but where there are laws and prison sentences available its always better to be sure.

What if it doesn't 'look' new...?

If you want to go the 'looks new' route, buy a wreck of a trailer and rebuild the whole thing. Then you just say its an old trailer that you made roadworthy again, keeping all the old documents and number plate

At a guess brush finish it with hammerite and dont wash it after youv taken it out. TBH how many of us have been pulled with a trailer?

I thought trailers had to be tested yearly or so in England no??
