Eyesight Problems

Had a job last weekend which involved drilling out some microswitch connections. last time I did some was August'ish however this time I found I had to stand back some way so I could focus properly, which ment I was too far away to see what I was doing. I have reading glasses but only use them once or twice a week but it seems my focul length has increased. As it's brass and produces those lovely little needles I didn't want to stand too close.
Those Gentlemen amongst you who wear glasses, how do you cope with jobs like this? I can't put my safety glasses on as well as my glasses and don't really want to put on a flippin' full face grindy/masky type thing.
Any ideas anyone

I spent ages trying on pairs of safety glases until found some that fit over my poxy reading specs. I also have a clear face sheild that I use when angle grinding on bigger jobs.
Sounds as thoug it is time t get your eyes tested again.

Hi,

I'm short-sighted but need to take my glasses off for 'close' work, like now where the monitor's around 14" from my nose...

If I wear my glasses then I have to stand back a couple of feet and then the work is so 'small' that I can't see what I'm doing anyway.

I've been recommended to get two pairs of glasses, one for normal and another for close work, but it doubles the cost so I'll stick with taking them off for a while yet.

I;ve been wearing vari or is it bi focals for a while now, Safety ones with side protectors are supplied by my work; both work qnd personql pairs work very well for close qnd distance; recently I purchqsed cheetah lens fron another site; to see with bucket down is q lot easier; lots of not to expensive options out there;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

I have bought myself a pair of bi focal safety specs reading glasses strength and supposedly clear on top but they just aren't clear I feel I'm having a hell of a time trying to get used to them, they are all right looking through the focal bit when cutting to a line for example but to see normally,well they aren't just right for some reason so i take them off and hang them from my shirt neck then they fall out when bending down and I have come near treading on them, which is why I got them in the first place as I have smashed several reading glasses in this way. Its damn awkward getting used to specs when you have never needed them before thats for sure.

I've got the opposite problem, worn glasses for 20years now eyesight has got more longsighted so reduced my shortsightedness to normal! now I no longer need glasses it feels very strange and as I've worn photochromic glasses everything is bright.

Hey Terry, I take it you have tried welding wearing varifocals......

Anyhow Chunko, only had my eyes tested last summer, first time in 26 years. Mrs Optomotrist said my sight was fine but may need some weak reading glasses for those occasions when I was tired. Over the last year I've found that it's been harder to see things up close (my wife has her own theory on this but lets not go there!)
I didn't realise you could get pescription safety glasses, probably cost an arm and a leg over here, but looks like the best option.

Hasbean, if you still have your prescription for your reading glasses, you can buy prescription safety glasses on-line for around £50.00. Not exactly stylish, but then we can't all look like George Clooney

Other than that, it's the good old full face over your ordinary reading glasses.

A word of warning to new spectacle wearers - Using ordinary safety glasses over the top of your expensive prescription spectacles will result in scratched lenses on your spectacles. This is because there is insufficient space on your nose for the bridge to sit, and still maintain a gap between the two lenses. I have had this happen to me twice in the past, so now buy prescription safety glasses every time I need to change - it works out cheaper in the long run.

Vari-focals. Took about 6 months to properly get used to them, but now they are fine. People often ask why I move my head up and down slightly when looking at something, but you have to look through the 'right' bit of the lens. Got vari-focal sunnies too.

Another vote for cheater lens ,had them on my bucket for a few years for low amp tig,but have been seen marking out and centre popping with a bucket on,don't get on with my prescription safety glasses i prefer just reading specs if i'm doing a lot of close work........prefer a visor for grinding anyway so no problem there

How did you get on......?

Night and day mate; no more swapping specs depending on work type; however, for gas welding I use a GW no5 type full face screen; same as what you would use when grinding; I found it difficult to focus on close work peering down normal gas welding googles; with full screen focusing is no problem:

Different story for MIG/TIG/ARC welding, difficult to focus on close work peering through a 4x2 inch window/tunnel, putting in roots is easy to view, capping/reinforcing was hell to follow to a decent standard. Purchased a 1.5 magnification cheater lens, has made a big difference, though I do wonder how long I have till my lamps cease to cope with welding

I looked into prescription safety glasses after yet another visit to the eye hospital for swarf removal but found no advantage from them over normal glasses and good googles.The sides of safety glasses are still uncovered allowing areas for swarf to get past.Goggles for me.

My (prescription) safety glasses have side screens on the arms, I thought they were standard? I still put goggles on when grinding as I have had sparks come over the top!

Agreed, safety glasses are not really suitable for grinding (these days), but they should all have side screens.

Funny how things move on - when I was an apprentice we were issued with safety glasses only, there were no goggles or full face shields available in the works. Did a lot of grinding drills and lathe tools and never had any problems, but I suppose we didn't have angle grinders back then.
