hi,when i was using my lincoln powertech 231c the extension lead got pretty hot but never melted.however when it was hot the volt amps meters on the machine werent working .i then changed to another extention and everything was fine again.i forgot to wind the first lead right out,thats why it heated up i think.why would the gauges stop working though???

probably because they work on 230 volt minimum using a thin lead wound up turns power in lead into heat u probably ended up with about 200 volt at welder or even less
