extending tube by 4 inch

hi folks , ive spent many a long hour reading some of the excellent info on the forum but now i need to ask a quick question

i'm currently starting out on building a bobber hardtail motorcycle but i need to extend the rear swinging arm by around 4" ,( adding the 4" half way down the swing arm ) the swinging arm is around 30mm round steel bar but i'm wondering if i need to weld in an internal sleeve to cover both welds as i don't really fancy just butt welding

any advice would be greatly received

I'd use an inner tube and drill some holes in the outer tube. Then plug weld. Then weld the seams.

Would spread the load better.

Sleeve and plug weld as said but also make an angled cut rather than square for the butt joint...

well what can i say , that info is just the very thing i'm looking for , nice one . i didn't even thing about using a 45 deg angle but it make perfect sense for making the weld much stronger .

once again many thanks for the info .. I'll post some pics once i get started , should have it done for the summer with a bit of luck


how do madkayaker , us cumbrians seem to get everywhere these days . if you look around the roads of cumbria this summer for a matt black chopper / bobber with a rather wobbly back wheel that will be me

I thought the point of a hard tail was not to have a swing arm? Rather than put a join in a swing arm I would remake the whole thing in some material suited to the job.

If you need to keep the joint straight, you can clamp the two separated sections it into the corner of a length of angle iron whilst you tack it up.
