extending sectional garage

I've got this 5.5m x 4m garage, that I'd like to extend to the side by about 1m.

I'm thinking of removing the side wall almost completely, but leaving one panel on each "end". The roof is made from corrugated steel sheets, and it's held up with a 3mm 40mm angle steel, resting on the concrete sections (well, bolted into them, actually).

I was hoping to use some RHS to support the roof along the way of the opening (about 4.5m of it), possibly with a RHS pillar in the middle as well to keep it stable.

The walls to the side will be made with weatherproof plywood, and then clad in some wood, or rendered and then painted.

I'm also going to change the short wall with no door to have a double door wide enough for a car trailer, so that I can drive through into the garden (space for trailer). The doors will be wood, and hopefully hanging of a 4x2" wooden frame.


My questions are:

1. Does it sound sensible on the face of it? Not too bothered about what the garage looks like, as it'll be mainly hidden away from view anyway (wall obscured by my neighbours garage)

2. If it sounds sensible, what size steel should I go for? I was thinking something like 50 x 50 x 3 for the main support across the ceiling and also a similar pillar in the middle (resting on plate of steel).


Anyone done anything similar?

In my experience pulling concrete sectional garages apart (*) they are ok being lengthened, but sideways is tricky to say the least.

Cant Picture Exactly Your Intentions But Sectional Garages Are Not Easy To Mess With In My Opinion.

Have Swapped The Top "End" Panels Around To Change The Pitch Of The Roof And The Panels Are Blooming Heavy.

is it a pitched roof in the middle or just flat and tapered from high at the front and lower at the back using cross ladder roof suports

The roof is pitched. It looks about 0.5-0.6m higher in the middle.

I realise that the pitched roof will be "unbalanced" from an aesthetic point of view, but I'm not too bothered about that (well, I'm more bothered about the space to store stuff in than I am about the looks)

I would make any alterations by building new framework the shape of the extension from angle connected to what walls you have left and the roof, in effect putting the strength there with steel bracing before cladding with whatever you choose.

Don't see it as a difficult job really as long as you 'tie in' plenty.

I think I'd move the whole side wall out as far as required and, as Steve has said, make a steel frame, with whatever cladding you like, to maintain strength.
You would need to either keep the centre of the roof pitch where it is by putting new rafters in on the extended side (you may be able to extend the existing) or start again with the pitch in the centre. The gable ends could be made up with cladding over of the existing concrete ends, if they are stable enough.
I'd look at getting rid of the corrugated steel and felt and board it or similar, to reduce condensation, but the rafters may need reinforcing due to the additional weight.
As far as the end door goes, it depends on how the wall is constructed but what you suggest should work with a bit of thought.
Sounds lots of work though, but probably quicker and cheaper than starting again.

Edit: when I built my brick garage I used all salvaged materials (the windows came out of an old cow shed!) its well worth looking around for 2nd hand stuff.
