exhaust manifold problem

Rover K Series Engine 16v

Re-doing the head gasket today on a friends car, the exhaust studs have stripped the threads on removal, from searching online I believe they are M10, is it possible to rethread it up to M12 without drilling before hand? as there isnt much room - and some kind friend borrowed my angle drill attachment and didnt return it

I would use helicoils rather than go up a size

either way it still needs drilling to be tapped if the threads stripped on removal the heads off so a standard drill will do it no need for a right angle drill unless you have already fitted the head which would be a little silly if you already new you had threads to be repaired

this would be my advice to,, iv tried going up a size before and along with having to drill every hole in the manifold you run the risk of hitting a water jacket in the head,, (had firsthad experience with this) best having the head off and using a pillar drill and setting a stop on the drill so you dont drill to far into the head

Thanks guys, went to local motor factors this morning and got helicoils. So exhuast manifold is now nice and tight to the head :-)
