exhaust down pipe repair

the downpipe on my peugeot 106 came apart today. upon inspection it looks like the pipe was an interference fit into the flange which connects to the rest of the exhaust system. the downpipe looks like steel and the flange looks like cast. the parts can be pushed back together and are a snug fit. the flange tapers to a thin edge over the downpipe.
i am going to try and mig weld the two pieces with my clarke pro 90, i have co2 / argon mix and a choice of steel or stainless wire.
what wire would be best?
any other ideas on how to re-attach the two parts if welding doesnt work? maybe run a bead or spots of weld to where the steel part enters the flange and grind them back so the flange is a tight fit?
i need solution, if only temporary, so i can get the car to a garage

the flanges I have seen (and welded) in the past were mild steel. You can buy replacement flanges, a quick search gave me http://exhaustpartsuk.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1270

I haven't bought from them but they list all the manufacturers so you may well find the bit you need or could try talking to them to see if it really is a cast flange that you have

I am presuming you haven't previously had a stainless exhaust fitted

It should be pretty apparent visually if it's stainless or carbon steel but if your unsure a magnet will help you confirm.
Weld it with the same consumable to the material of exhaust. I'd be very surprised if the flange is cast. Id guess the system inc flange to be steel unless it's been fitted with a sports stainless system.

all sorted now, the flange was steel and welded ok, had a bit of trouble with the wire feed but realised the wire on the spool was almost gone, fitted a new spool and al ok.
