I had a job last week digging out some fairly big leylandi stumps, it was a 5 tonne plus digger job really but with no access for anything that big it was time consuming with our 1.5t machine - it certainly did the job though and beat attempting it by hand but couldn't help thinking we needed a sharper narrower bucket all the time. The chances are we'll get more odd jobs like this at some point so I've been looking into a root ripping blade - RSL ones are £300ish off ebay - expensive to have sat around idle 99% of the time so thinking about making one. With a spare bucket hitch already to hand I'm pretty sure I can make similar for a lot less.
The plan once I've got a mock up in ply is to have the local fabricators plasma cut the bulk of it from MS plate and I'll weld it all up. It seems like a good idea to have the cutting tip and saw teeth on the back replaceable - all easy enough and within my capabilities so far. Then I wondered about either hardfacing the cutting edges or maybe better still making them from hardox and this is where I'm a bit lost I've never used the stuff and it seems pretty hard to find in small sizes / quantities most likely there are tonnes of waste cut offs being weighed in all across the country that would be more than big enough for what I want yet my brief google search only seems to turn up huge thick sheets that would cost more than my digger is worth
.
Anyone have any suggestions for sources of small pieces (max 18" x 4" x 12mm thick) or am I better off getting hold of some hardfacing rods and laying that down on the edges instead - or perhaps I'm better off just forgetting about harder materials and put up with having to replace mild steel bits a bit more frequently?
