Evolution Precision File Sander

I need to rub down a lot of spindles on two staircases and my detail sander will only get so far (and my arms/elbows/wrists less far )

I reckon Evolution tools are generally good quality - so what is the view of the group on this one (not the price or supplier, just the tool) -

I don't have direct experience of that tool, but I'd expect it to be decent quality from Evolution.

What I would question, sadly, is how practical it will be for staircase spindles - my experience of similar tools from other manufacturers is that it's very easy for them to gouge / run away, especially when working at an angle. But then I guess that's what filler is for

I've got a black and decker one and in my opinion might be a bit over zealous. I'd be tempted just to wrap some sand paper around it and pull like one of those hand chain saws.

[edit]Put it this way with a reasonably agressive grit my finger sander made light work of sanding away ~20mm of M24 bolt in a rather inaccessible location[/edit].

will leave flat spots often if your not carefull

when your rubbing down ? to clean paint off ? or to make it smooth?

if paint id used a paint stripper then sand

I've had 2, killed 1 but the second is great. It's had a couple of years of being the go to tool for anything needing fettling....wood, metal, even stone! However I'm not convinced it's much good for detail work on spindles tbh

Flap wheel in a 90deg drill might be easier for a job like that.
You can profile them to suit with a horseshoe file if necessary

Thanks all. The round bits I have done using cheap pad from Proper Job. It's the square parts at the bottom where they are too close to get a detail sander in.

It's rubbing down. They are currently dark wood and white is the new dark wood

Looks like elbow grease then. No excuse for another toy! Damn!!!

I've got one but I wouldn't use it for that. Look for a Bosch PPR250ES sanding machine or similar for the spindles, better suited to the job.

I've got two, 1st one was faulty but they let me keep in after replacement, and it's still going, good tools.

As others have said, wrong tool for the job.

If you are painting white then a quick go over with scotch brite, degrease then straight on with the zinnser bin. Topcoat of your choice.

What detail sander is it? You can get extended noses for many of them (e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-2608000199-Sanding-Finger-Sanders/dp/B0009W874A/ - look also at the recommended additional items).

It is also possible to buy finger sanding 'blades' for multitools (e.g. from Saxton Blades).

Looks like a lump of 2x1 with some emery paper around it!

Thanks for all the suggestions, when a few appear, maybe a Bosch one as the spare sanding accessories seem more available than for Batvia and Machine mart or just expensive!
