Ever had a project that just doesn't go to plan ?

Making a rear bumper for someone, measured up and made it up, looked good and when it came to fitting it just wasn't right…………



So I've taken it back, cut the rear out with the plasma and it now sits at the right level depth wise but its too low, cue having to take to it with the grinder, slicing out the base and welding it in lower in order to allow me to pivot it.

This job was meant to take a couple of weeks on and off but its up to a couple of months now, made other bumpers before out of folded sheet pieces so as this project has been nothing but a hassle for me I've decided to never use box section again to build a rear bumper folded sheet is so much nicer to work with especially as you can mount it up and see whats going on from above to meddle with before welding on the top sheet

I had the same issue with a rear bumper I was making for a Disco. Scrapped it in the end. Every time I offered it up again something else had moved!!

This one sits right and its the same size as the standard one (will fit the end caps on if you wanted) but just doesn't sit right


Feel bad as it was meant to fit straight out the workshop but complications always arise….the defender winch bumper I've just made is perfect, the shogun winch tray I've made for a monocoque shell is fine but this **** of a bumper is doing my nut in wont be scrapping it I'm just going to modify it to sit properly and then as a little act of good faith I'm going to red oxide and paint it for him again (he did it last time to cut costs)

Would have been easier to build it from sheet in hindsight but I had the box available and it was the right size………..never again

Well the factory one had +/- 10mm adjustment so what chance does the DIYer have!

Scrapped the project, given the guy a refund and I'm gonna make it into a front bumper I think as box section works better for that

Good on you for having exacting standards, I know people who would keep the guys money and say 'it's a Landy, it's supposed to look like that!'.

Refunded (or will be when the bank opens on monday as I've had exams this week) £110 which is what it was going to cost minus the expensive towbar that he's keeping

Not too bothered, it didn't fit and it was my fault for using box section and I can accept that. Sheet steel is far superior for this kind of work and I'll never use box section for a rear bumper again

It's the landrover yard stick tolerance.

I used to production weld disco chassis ,Rover always had trouble fitting back bumpers level.
the reason being due to weld distortion on the seamers, the back of the boxed side rails were always out ie one side lower than the other.
