ever had 2k not harden ?

recommended someone to use 2k direct gloss on their engine bay

theyve gone ahead and done it over rattle can primer and mixed it with no thinner , its still sticky a week later

i said in years of working in a bodyshop ive not had this

A mate painted his mini years ago and added no hardener it did kind of dry but it was a bad job

Does he have any left over? If so just try a small quantity and see if it hardens. I mixed some last week, paint and hardener were from two different manufacturers that hardened without issues. I wouldn’t recommend doing that but it was all I had

yeh its what i suggested he tried and yes ive mixed and matched all sorts and it always works

I had this one time... forgot to add hardener. Mixed up another batch with extra hardener and sprayed it all over the top.

Ended up with a nasty looking wrinkle finish, and wasn't particularly hard, but it did dry eventually.

It was on a scraper tractor so any paint was better than no paint!

What if the hardener was mislabeled or had gone off, somehow?

Best advice to the guy would be to get in there with some thinners and wash it all off, don’t see the sense in waiting for the inevitable.

Ive had it when using dregs of old paint and hardener once. Left if gor weeks in the sun and still didn't quite go hard.
Hard enough to clog sanding pads in seconds, but too hard to wipe off.

Sounds like he left the hardener out or didnt put enough in, many people will never admit they left it out! Or was the paint way out of date? I had an experience with two pack epoxy pitch years ago. Had a repair job below waterline to finish on a boat , owner wanted it epoxied, I had half a gallon of eopxy left over about 3 years out of date, knocked it up mixed it well, perfect conditions except it didnt cure at all. 4 days later i started scraping it off, several gallons of gunwash later it was clean enough to redo. Expensive lesson!

I primered my tow bar with epoxy primer but it never went properly hard. I didn't know what was wrong, I definitely added the correct % of hardener & thinners. I top coated it with 1k enamel & it dried ok. I fitted it anyway & eventually it did sort of harden.
A few months later when I went to use the epoxy primer for another job that I realised I had no hardener for it. Then it clicked what I had done - I had used 2k hardener instead of epoxy hardener on the tow bar job by mistake, hence why it didn't harden!

So did your friend use the correct hardener for the type of paint?

I had to paint a bonnet at work once, as I had previuosly only done painting at home with celly I assumed the paint was celly.Came back after the weekend to find it was two pack and I hadn't used any hardener.Cleaned it all of with thinners and redid it with hardener and it came out fine. I reckon your chap did the same and left the hardener out.

Picked up on the end of this Steve. I've been known to forget the hardener. It air dried nicely. Customer came back three months later as it had a look of crazy paving. I'm going to suggest, it was a mix of incompatible products. i.e acrylic and epoxy??

Several guys painted a whole helideck on one ship I worked on....and it never hardened.

Nobody told them that when one can has a big A on the side, and another has a big B on it, you mix them together....

Another problem like this i have had is applying Single pack paints over newly cured epoxy both West system & Epoxy primers, unless the epoxy is fully cured it can retard drying of the single pack used over it, often to the point it will never fully dry.
Never had the problem with 2k paints over epoxy.
