Ever since I acquired an Xcalibur Eurostar 150 I have had the niggling feeling that all is not well. Until now I had put it down to poor technique HOWEVER, having now picked up more gas this afternoon the wire feed on the little Eurostar finally went from working intermittently to not feeding whatsoever.
I found the number for the Wilkinson Star service department who were extremely helpful and I really can't thank them enough. On describing my problems the guy suggested to check the connections to the trigger, motor and wire speed potentiometer. Asked him whether opening it up would invalidate my warranty to which he said it wouldn't if I am just looking, so off I went with my screwdrivers...
On further investigation it would seem that the poor little thing has been dropped fairly callously at some point before I acquired it! Not sure whether the blokes at BOC know or not but they did seem a little rosy cheeked when I mentioned I was having problems both when I phoned them yesterday and again today instore. I have not told them I have discovered the cause of the problems...
Wire feed problem!- PCB IS HANGING OFF BY THE POTENTIOMETER!!!
Evidence of droppage-
Not exactly sure how to approach this now as obviously they could just turn around and say that I dropped it. I can assure you I have been extremely careful with this unit and that for the last week it has been given more attention than my girlfriend.
What would you guys do in this position?
I don't want a refund as I can see that given the chance this welder would be absolutely perfect for what I am doing and a couple of guys I know who are in the motor trade rave about Xcalibur machines.
Ideally I would like to just change the potentiometer myself (well within my abilities as I have been making my own pcbs etc for years) and be done with it hopefully ,but the signs of droppage have got me worrying that something else might be up with it. Obviously if I change the pot and there are still problems I am on my own and may be having to take the thing to Manchester for the lovely folks at Wilkinson Star to service it for me at my own expense.
This has been an adventure so far to say the least...
