euro torch

stupid question how do you measure the length of a euro torch mine seems to measure from euro fitting to end of torch just short of 3 metres is this classed as a 3 metre torch i am looking to buy a longer torch 4 metres would be nice would i have any change in settings needed with said torch
mig is a ERFI 640 140amps i have had it from new so now 25years old
i did add a fan so now it's a turbo did make a big differance to duty cycle on top amps i know ERFI made a 640 and a 700 was a bigger case one other point is on the amps switch it's rotary 1 to 6 or 7 but only works on 1 to 6 7 is dead always been like it anybody any ideas thanks to all

Hi ya octo. Yep thats a 3 meters you have got. I have recently done same uped to 4 meters and my m/c is prob as old if not older ( it's a cleark 120 ) old blue METAl build one. I had previously replaced liner in my 3 mtr one but that twisted up in use a. when I looked at ebay I picked up new 4 mtr one for less that £40. If I had bought 1) new liner 2) new shroud 3) new tip it would be getting near price of new one, no brainer. There was a post on up grading to 4 or even 5 mts with the pros and cons. Main thing is to try and keep it streight, don't coil excess when using. Rember your wire feed motor is now pushing an extra 1 meter of wire if you go for 4 meters. Ref you power switch fault, chances are you may have a broken wire output at the switch if all other settings work. It depends how good/confident you are with a multi meter as to tracking down fault. Have you even looked at back of switch yet. If you not happy working on mains equipment then UNPLUG an just look with tourch, gentle poking to find any brakes. Any pics of back of switch might help or even a schmatic

Hi thanks for reply the rotary amps switch has been like it from new i wondered if the 640 was the same interals as the 700 just in a smaller case without the fan and the extra position switch not connected i will have to investigate further the chance of a wiring diagram is pretty rare when i bought the erfi i was told it's a down rated industial machine so i will have to have a look into it my torch is ok just needs to be a bit longer as the original is now getting a bit tatty

7 might be dead by design, does it do anything at all when selected and the trigger pressed? Does gas come out of the nozzle? Might be a 'gas purge' setting, one member recently hired a machine that had that feature.
Oh, and the switch controls the voltage, not amps

yes i think 7 might be dead by design as well when you try the torch thats dead too so could be gas purge
the bit i was trying to find out was as this was a derated industrial mig the next one up being a erfi 700 in a bigger case with a fan and another 20/30 volts the front panels on both look the same just trying to find a wiring diagram now is looking for gold the mig is 25years old plus all good fun

tryed the no 6/7 seems dead

tried the no 6/7setting seems dead by design or gas purge fan runs and gas soloniod works no wire feed or volts will put up some pictures just got to find the card reader first

If only the gas solenoid works then it definitely sounds like a gas purge setting.
If it's 25 years old then it's probably a decently built set, nice wire feed unit and quality motor I expect.

Sorry im dyslexic so english is not my strong point i have to use spell checker a lot you will have to take bigger breaths
the wire feed motor is the size of a car wiper motor and looks like it drive though 90% gears wire feed is all metal no plastic if i can ever find my card reader i will put some pictures up

Sounds like you've got a nice machine there.
Older machines seemed to be built to last but unfortunately nowadays we want everything cheaper so manufacturers look for ways to save money and a smaller wire feed mechanism is one way of getting the cost down.

finally found the card reader

the nail is to hold the wire reel on with the cover off
it's the cover the holds the wire in place so just drilled a hole and dropped a nail in it's worked for 25 years now
only other mod i have done is add a big fan inside the case and drill loads of holes in the back panel for the fan to get air through has made a big difference to duty cycle,
on max power went from 12 mins to 30 mins before the thermal trips kicks in and about half the time again to trip back in again
seems the 700 version had a bigger case with a fan and 1 extra position on power mine has a dead position and works as a gas purge
just need to treat it to a new 4 metre torch original is getting a bit tatty now after 25 years
the welder doesn't get much use nowadays last big job was about 30/40 hours on a series 111 landy rebuild everybody said you need a new chassis so i repaired it it's still running about towing a horse trailer 15 years on it was a body off rebuild when i did it
it's done loads of car body bits over the years next jod is some welding on my disco in a few places not as rusty as some at 14 years old

Octo, that is a very nice well made strong-looking machine. The wire feed mechanism alone makes it commendable.
How about a shufti at the windings? Proper copper wound, primary and secondary?

windings are copper it's over 25 years old i bought it new cost me just short of £400 then so dear at the time was told it's a derated industrial machine
hence the question of the next model up the 700 i will get some more pictures when i can get in the shed to get it out to get the covers off i should think it needs a blow out inside as well not done it for a few years

just been treated to a clean a new reg with flow meter care of weldquip shroud and a few tips going to try a roll of 0.6 wire i have always have used 0.8 so will give it a go

i have one of these i will take some pics of the wiring diagram and upload it

on my large transformer there is a wire thicker than the rest it is blanked off
so im thinking the same maybe upgradedable to 180 amp ?

Hi flash have a look at my album eric the erfi all pictures are there the 700 was a bigger case with a fan i was told mine (640) was a de rated 700 without the fan in a smaller case but thats in 1988

there is no dates anywere on this only date i can find is 3/3/85 on the bottom right hand side of the wiring diagram
